Pay Attention: Watch Out For How Toto Asia Is Taking Over And How To Stop It

The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding production facilities overseas, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as a market that would grow for bidet and washlet toilet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto was documenting Toto words to ensure that the future generations would be able to read them. However, many of the words were replaced with foreign words, such as dui, which is Bengali for verandah.

Origins

Established in 1917, Toto's beginnings mirrored Japan's development. In the beginning, Toto manufactured goods to meet the demand for modern, brand new urban housing. To achieve this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered automation for production control, allowing greater efficiency and a more consistent production.

In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began to expand overseas to profit from sales and new markets. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and marketing other products of manufacturers to complement its own line of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped to increase sales and expand the firm’s global market share.

In the 90s, Toto began to concentrate on research and development of water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better serve the needs of its customers and to increase profits. The company also employed the approach of just-in-time in its supply chain management and sales program. This led to a higher level customer satisfaction.

Toto continues to invent toilet technology. The most recent toilet features a strong, eco-friendly tornado flush. Toto uses recycled water for its manufacturing process, and also has a green purchasing policy. Toto also produces faucets, bathtubs and hand dryers with higher energy efficiency than standard models.

The first Toto museum opened in the year 2015. It features exhibits on Toto's most famous products, their evolution, the group companies (all of which are ceramics) and the history of plumbing, and even bath units. In a separate gallery you can see Toto products sold all over. The museum also has the bathroom equipped with a WASHLET and other toilet innovations.

Before beginning the formation of Toto members of the group did sessions for a variety of musicians. Boz Scaggs' album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich and guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather, drummers Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also performed on albums by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

You would expect a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog rock band however, it's actually a fairly straight forward rock band. The group started out as a group and recorded two albums: 1979's self-titled debut, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. Although the band have a wide range of musical backgrounds their biggest breakthrough came in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster, but not without difficulties. Record companies placed the band on the spot with the ultimatum "give us a hit record or we'll sack you" and the pressure was on to meet the deadline. Toto was able achieve this feat with the help of the hit song "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is due to their prior experience in the music industry, as the band members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts before starting the group. Their sonic trademark has become the standard for '80s music, influencing many contemporary artists.

The album starts out hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR tunes that slowly get into your head. The album also has some slower, more jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song which combines folk and distorted AOR and sounds completely wrong, but actually works wonderfully well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes started to plummet. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band went through various drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the after he was charged with drug abuse. the band continued as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It wasn't as popular as IV. However, the band still managed to release another chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet style of previous albums and was a more powerful, constant effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album was a reflection of the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency on the drums, as well as an improved, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard work was also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on previous recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded the band's Amsterdam live performance that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The studio album came out just a few months later and the group went on an extensive world tour in support of it. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demo tapes and tapes to make an album that would feature songs that were never recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album titled Then and Now. It was the first album in the band's history not to feature one single track with the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and singer Williams was suffering from a severe laryngitis infection that limited his singing abilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially restructuring the band. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was occupied with Yes at the period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had the appearance of singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
